Bergqvist out of European indoor champs

STOCKHOLM (AFP) -- Sweden's world high jump champion Kajsa Bergqvist announced Monday she has pulled out of the European indoor championships due to a lack of form.

Bergqvist set the best performance of the year in 2006 with a leap of 2.05 metres at the Super Grand Prix in London.

However she feels that her current form would leave her struggling to pass the bar at 1.97-1.98 meters.

"I'm not sure I would even reach heights of 1.97-1.98 meters so it doesn't make any sense to me to participate in the championships," she said in a statement.

Bergqvist is the second top Swede to pull out of the March 2-4 competition in Birmingham, England after Olympic triple jump champion Christian Olsson pulled out a few days ago with a thigh injury.

Bergqvist complained of not feeling the same flexibility in her ankles as she did last year.

Despite not suffering any injuries and claiming she is otherwise fit, she is now looking forward to defending her title at the world championships later this year in Japan.

"Since my first indoor competition last month I've fought hard to get back to full fitness but it hasn't happened for me. "Now I just want to look forward with confidence and motivation for the summer outdoor season. My main objective will be to defend my gold medal in Osaka, Japan."

Bergqvist shares the same coach, Yannick Tregaro, as Olsson.
